PORT CHESTER — A 22-year-old Port Chester woman holding her year-old baby was assaulted with a board containing a protruding nail today, police said.
The woman’s hand was cut; the baby was not injured, police said.
Alex Herrera, 20, who shares a Smith Street home with the victim, his sister, got into an argument with her over a gold necklace early this morning, police said. He punched her in the back, then after she had picked up her baby, he swung at her with the 3-foot-long 1-by-2-inch piece of lumber from which the nail was protruding, cutting her thumb, police said.
When police arrived, Herrera was in his attic apartment swinging the wood like a bat to hold police at bay, police said. Two officers were able to overtake him without anyone being injured around 12:45 a.m.
Herrera was charged with second-degree attempted assault, a felony, and three misdemeanors; endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree menacing and resisting arrest.
